Microsoft unveiled Azure Maia 300, the third generation of its in-house AI accelerator, at the OCP Global Summit. Maia will become its primary system for AI inference, with multi-gigawatt deployments from 2027, reportedly with 288GB of HBM4 memory. Cloud companies are turning inward, with Amazon reported in talks to buy Decart for around 7 billion dollars.
Owning silicon is about cost and supply: inference is becoming the dominant AI expense, and its own chip gives Microsoft more control while investors ask how quickly AI spending becomes revenue. Nvidia share in China fell as Huawei rose.
